1845
Founded in Faith
Zion AME Church was established in South Philadelphia as part of the African Methodist Episcopal movement — the first independent Black denomination in America, founded by Bishop Richard Allen in 1816.
1928
A Sanctuary Built to Last
The current sanctuary at 1600 S. 21st Street was dedicated in 1928 — a testament to the sacrifice and determination of generations of Zion members who built a permanent home for worship in the heart of their community.

Continuing the Mission
For nearly two centuries, Zion has served as a spiritual anchor for South Philadelphia — feeding families, educating youth, and proclaiming the Gospel through every season of change the city has known.

What We Believe
As a congregation of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, our faith is grounded in the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition and the historic Articles of Religion. These core convictions shape our worship, our community, and our witness.
The Holy Scriptures
We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God — the only sufficient rule of faith and practice. Scripture is our foundation for all matters of belief and daily living.
The Holy Trinity
We believe in one God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — three persons in one divine being. God is the creator and sustainer of all things, worthy of our worship, love, and obedience.
Jesus Christ Our Savior
We believe Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, took on human flesh, suffered, died, and rose again for our salvation. He is the only mediator between God and humanity.
Salvation by Grace Through Faith
We believe salvation is the free gift of God, received through faith in Jesus Christ. We are justified by grace — not by works — and called to live transformed lives in response to God's mercy.
The Church & the Sacraments
We believe the Church is the community of all faithful believers. We observe two sacraments ordained by Christ: Holy Baptism and the Lord's Supper — outward signs of inward grace.
Justice & Human Dignity
Rooted in the AME tradition, we believe in the full humanity and dignity of every person. We are called to advocate for justice, serve those in need, and work for the flourishing of all people.

Zion is a proud member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church — the oldest independent Black denomination in the United States, founded in Philadelphia in 1816 by Bishop Richard Allen.

The AME Church symbol is the anvil — representing strength, endurance, and the forging of faith under pressure. Just as iron is shaped on the anvil, the AME Church has been shaped by the fires of adversity into an instrument of God's grace and justice.
